I am sharing here videos of things that I am trying to learn on the guitar. Most of them are part of my personal exploration of the many great guitarists from Congo, who created one of my favorite sounds with my favorite instrument.
I created a website, guitaresoukous.com, just to share some thoughts and tips about this congolese music.

You're Under Arrest - theme and walking bass line
A John Scofield original that I always enjoyed and finally decided to try to understand a little more.
In order to understand the sound of this theme I tried to play it with the root of the chord at the same time and I ended up with this simple arrangement.
The harmony is a basic Anatole (I-VI-II-V) in E, then moves to C and finally C#.
The melody follows the chords but instead of the basic chord tones it uses the tritone interval (b5) as much as possible. Along the way he uses 9th, b6b9, b7, 8, min7 arpeggios, and semi-diminished scale and everything looks very chord-centered.
I like the whole thing but the theme in particular can be a good opportunity to learn at least the sound of the b5 interval.

I saw Bill Frisell playing this at the Lincoln Center not so long ago but could not find any video of that performance. Then I heard a radio performance of the same piece on KUTX and that's what I tried to learn and play here (more or less).

A few lines from Kata Fumbwa. The guitarist should be Arc-en-Ciel (aka Petit Makaba, Bikorino etc). Seriously?! You know first of all there is already a transcription of this with the actual song so why would anyone wanna use this unless they're an idiot or a robot?
I think Mboka knows how to play that Serge Palmi sebene best only by himself. I have only heard a closer version recently by Tolbert Solo. The rest is best reserved to Mboka Liya

yeah, sorry about that. Sometimes I changed my mind from transcribing to playing back and decided to keep the discrepancy. On bar 11 there is a B that is actually played on 4th string, 9th fret, and the 9x797x is played actually as a Gbm triad xx7675 and then you can just play Ebm triad as passing chord xxx876. Hope this helps
